Data Consultant – What will the future hold?

11 Mar Data Consultant – What will the future hold?

“The only thing we know about the future is that it will be different.” – Peter Drucker

FutureAs a Consultant with expertise in SAP Data Services on many SAP implementation projects, I am regularly asking myself, “What is yet to come? Should I invest in learning another Data Integration platform?”

My answer is, “No, I will stick with Data Services”. My reason for this belief is that the ongoing push by SAP to sell HANA will continue to create even more Big Data projects.

Allow me to share my personal views about Big Data’s positive impact for all Data Consultants.

Data quality in the source system is more important than ever before. SAP HANA has made it easier for businesses to organize and manipulate data to get a clearer picture of what’s going on within their business. Noticeably, the integration between SAP HANA and Data Services makes handling of huge amounts of data significantly easier and faster. However, data quality issues do not diminish as volumes increase – if anything, increasing the volume of data only serves to increase the data quality issues uncovered. This will lead to further opportunities for Data Services Consultants.

I also believe that the volume of unstructured data will exceed structured data, which we are accustomed to build intelligence on (according to a 2011 IDC study, “Unstructured data will account for 90 percent of all data created in the next decade.”). For example, Data Services’ Text Data Processing can analyse consumer sentiment, out of the box, from sources such as Facebook and Twitter – and then geographically segment those consumer responses by the embedded geocode information. This demand to extract data from Social Media will create more opportunities for Data Consultants.

Quadrant

Gartner Inc. positioned SAP last year in the leader’s quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools 2014 report. The report evaluated Data Services products from SAP and recognized it as a leading provider based on its “ability to execute” and “completeness of vision”. According to Gartner, the demand for SAP Data Services tool across many industry sectors will place Data Services Consultants in a better position on the job market.

SAP continues to win business for SAP Data Services products, for example Adobe Systems chose SAP Data Services over SQoop for Hadoop data – http://ow.ly/JR6Hx

As we wonder what we can expect next, I say “The Best is yet to come!” The demand generated by Big Data projects will create more opportunities for Data Consultants. The exponential growth we have seen in Social Media will lead to new opportunities to help companies leverage data insights and visualise data. The Gartner Magic Quadrant result affirms SAP Data Services leadership in data integration space and emphasizes the long-term employment prospects for Data Services Consultants.
